A.N.T.S.
Adequate Nationwide Treatment for Sufferers
of Eating Disorders
Funding Update - February 2004.
The funding applications that A.N.T.S. made, to support the initiatives for North Somerset outlined on our website action page, have not been successful. The funders have told us that these facilities should be provided by the Statutory Bodies; or plainly put, by the Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWMHPT), the Primary Care Trust and, possibly, from North Somerset Council Social Services. It is acknowledged that the facilities are not provided and are desperately needed but the charities monies cannot be used to support facilities that are a statutory responsibility. As we have no funds to support these initiatives and are, at present, unlikely to secure sufficient funding in the near future, A.N.T.S. has no option but to suspend the projects, rather than raise false hopes for sufferers in this area.
The proposal for North Somerset, sent to Brian Cotter, M.P. for Weston-super-Mare, in March 2003, is still in the planning stage. The theory was that Brian Cotter, as an M.P., would have more success at arranging a meeting between the “Statutory Bodies” than A.N.T.S. would. It would seem that this has not been the success that was hoped for and the “Statutory Bodies” remain as slippery and reticent as ever. In fairness, I have to say that the initial response received from North Somerset Council, nearly a year ago, was both open and supportive.
The provision of treatment for eating disorder sufferers and their carers or families remains as it was at National Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2003 and before. Let us hope that the new Eating Disorder Treatment Guidelines, recently published by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, produces a positive result.

"This website is a vital tool
for those who may feel lost or alone, carers and sufferers alike,
who seek support and information that may,
put simply, save the life of someone they love."
Brian Cotter MP, Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Weston-super-Mare 1997-2005.
