Hi, I have just found out about this website via an Eating Disorder hospital in america.
I have suffered Anorexia and bulimia for more than 16 years. It has been a constant battle to get any help other that anti depressants and counselling. However by pure chance I found out about a Professor in America who have been treating bulimia with a drug for the past 10 years and being extremely successful. They have found that in a bulimic the main nerve pathway becomes hyper active and sends out wrong messages. It is these nerve fibres that control our intake and when we have eaten sends out a message to say "full" in Bulimia this does not happen hence the amounts of food consumed etc. The drug actually blocks off the nerve fibres and allows it to recover. I was a severe bulimic and nothing had ever helped me until this treatment. Within 5 days my bulimic behaviour had ceased!!! na d I have had 2 years free now. I want other sufferers to know about this "hope", to me is a miracle and has safed my life. I have a lot more info as its difficult to explain briefly what this all about. But please email me because I really want to help others get the correct treatment here. It can be done here, I am living proof. After all its not what you know but who you know in the right places. Kind regars Rachel

Watch this space.

Hi Ian
Yes, the board is still active, but only just it would seem. Lots of people visit but few leave a message.
Your story is so familiar to me and I sometimes despair of ever being able to make a loud enough noise to make "the powers that be" listen seriously, understand and actually do something positive, rather than waste money on "calamine lotion treatment" fattening up anorexics and then abandoning them to a worse fate, because of the lack of adequate, effective support in the community.
I would suggest you contact: www.swedauk.org - Somerset & Wessex Eating Disorders Association, to see if they can help with a group for male anorexics.
I will also contact you by my personal email as you have made comments, which interest me on that level, that I would like to discuss further.
As you say, Ian, don't let the bastards grind you down! We all have a right to a decent life. You know, the sort that "the powers that be" enjoy, as do most others in the UK, but don't seem to want us to have!
Regards.
John.

Hi
I hope that this message board is still in use as so far what i have read about this organisation fills me with some hope. I am a 29 yr old guy who has been battling Anorexia for the last 2 years. I have spent time in hospital as a result of becoming so physically unwell and am currently receiving "some" psychiatric treatment on an out patient basis. The real problem that i have is really the way that i am viewed as i do not really fit into the "normal" parameters of an anorexic. Im too old, too male etc etc. The treatment that i received on the general ward was adequate at best and as my own background is in psychioatric nursing, all the staff cheerfully agreed that i knew more about my condition than any of them did!. Their sole focus was trying to get as much food down me as possible and get me out the door. As a result i did gain weight but far too quickly to cope with and as a result relapsed not long afterwards. I have since had to give up work, my relationship has ended and i have had to move home.
Without giving you all a sob story i was just wondering if any of you knew of any groups or organisations geared towards us male anorexics out here that continually get treated with scorn, distrust and have doubt cast upon our masculinity!
As i said this seems like a great organisation and anything i can do to help in my area (East Midlands) i would be more than happy to do so
Cheers to you all and dont let the bastards grind you down
Ian x

Hi Heather,
Thank you for your comments.
Specialist facilities should be available in the area in which you live, be capable of delivering effective services that are appropriate to your age, which allow progression through the "recovery" stages and include all forms of eating disorder conditions. It's time for change!
I accept your reservation about "Sufferers". People with an eating disorder undoubtedly suffer, usually in silence. It is because they rarely complain that they are so easily ignored, even when the lack of proper treatment leads to their deaths. Again, it's time for change!
You refuse to see yourself as a "sufferer" and that is a key weapon in the fight to beat an eating disorder. Suffer maybe but not "sufferer" - don't ever change it, refuse to be squashed!
Best wishes.
John.

Hi Emily,
Thank you for your comments and for passing the word to others about ANTS.
You can find the petition on the Home page, click on the red "February 2004 - Update" link. Information on where to send it is included and on our "Contacts" page. We need to receive it by Thursday 22 April so we can take it with us to London but the more signatures the better.
Best wishes.
John.

It's great to hear that you're doing this. Thank you.
There are undoubtedly some excellent Eating Disorder services in the UK. But it constantly frustrates me they're almost all
situated in London and the Home Counties, almost entirely targeted at women under 25 and generally only accept those who slot neatly into the narrow DSM criteria for anorexia and bulimia. Too many people outside of those parameters are dying. I agree with you that more equity is the key.
However, my one reservation is your use of the name "sufferer" in the name of your campaign. However much I may suffer, I don't want to call myself a sufferer. Though I still, even after 12 years, battle my Eating Disorder every hour of every day, I now refuse to allow that suffering to define who I am and dictate every aspect of my life.
But that said, keep fighting! I'm well aware that getting the funding I needed saved my life. And I'm too young to be going to the funerals of my friends ...
An ant who has yet to be squashed.
Heather

My best wishes to John Brice and all who support the ANTS march to Westminster on April 23rd to 26th.
The more signatures on those petitions the better!.
Government only puts funds to an issue once the politicians in charge have been convinced that a lot of people who vote at elections are worked up about the issue.
This is a GOLDEN orrortunity to make a difference. Show them we care!
The NICE guidelines are good but without resources they will not be put into practice except in areas which are already well funded..
Money to pay staff and to fund the extra training or re-training as needed for these staff in areas which do not yet have adequaate services has to be allocated if the present patchwork provision is to be transformed into a nationwide high quality service.
